O V Vijayan’s  first and most famous novel, Khasakkinte Itihasam (The Legends of Khasak, 1969) tells the story of a teacher named Ravi dispatched to a newly created school in remote Khasak near Palakkad.

This novel does not have a single narrative plot but  offers many tales of village life, with an extensive and diverse range of characters. Vijayan took twelve years to complete Khasak. It was serialized in Mathrubhumi weekly in 1968 and published as a book in 1969.
